Japandi: Japanese calm meets Scandinavian comfort

Japandi joins two traditions that value simplicity, natural materials and craft: Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian comfort.

Two ideas behind it

  • Wabi-sabi — a Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in the imperfect, the natural and the aged: hand-made pottery, weathered wood, visible texture.
  • Hygge — the Danish and Norwegian idea of cosiness and comfort: soft textiles, warm light and rooms that feel good to be in.

What defines the style

  • Materials: light and dark woods, bamboo, rattan, paper, linen, wool and stoneware.
  • Palette: muted neutrals and earthy tones — sand, clay, stone, soft green — with small black accents.
  • Furniture: low, simple and well made, with clean lines and soft curves.
  • Space: few objects, hidden storage and room to breathe.
  • Craft: fewer pieces of better quality, often hand-made.

Bringing it into a room

  1. Clear first

Remove what isn't used or loved. Empty space is part of the style.

  2. Choose natural materials

A wooden table, a linen throw, a wool rug and a stoneware vase set the tone.

  3. Keep the palette quiet

Two or three muted colours, with one darker accent for contrast.

  4. Add warmth

Warm, low lighting and soft textiles keep the room from feeling cold.

  5. One living element

A single branch or plant is enough.
