Minimal flower arrangement: less is more

A single branch in the right vase can say more than a crowded bouquet. Minimal arrangements are about line, space and restraint.

The idea

Minimal arrangements use a few stems and let empty space do part of the work. The approach is close to Japanese ikebana, where the line of each branch and the space around it matter as much as the flowers.

How to build one

  1. Choose the vessel first

A simple vase, a bowl or a bottle. Its shape and colour set the mood.

  2. Pick a main line

One branch or tall stem that gives height and direction.

  3. Add a supporting element

A second, shorter stem or a few leaves that answer the first line.

  4. Add one focal flower

A single bloom placed low, where the eye will rest.

  5. Stop early

When in doubt, remove a stem rather than add one.

Keeping flowers fresh

  • Cut stems at an angle with a sharp knife and put them in water straight away.
  • Remove leaves that would sit under water.
  • Change the water every one or two days and recut the stems.
  • Keep arrangements away from direct sun, heaters and ripening fruit.
