Jewellery basics: metals, stones and settings

Understanding a few terms — karats, hallmarks, cuts and settings — makes it much easier to choose jewellery wisely.

Gold purity

Pure gold is 24 karat, but it is too soft for most jewellery, so it is mixed with other metals. The karat tells you the share of gold:

  • 18 karat = 75% gold, often stamped 750. It is the most common standard for jewellery in Iran.
  • 14 karat = about 58.5% gold, stamped 585.

The other metals also set the colour: copper for rose gold, and metals such as palladium or silver for white gold.

Silver and platinum

  • Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, stamped 925. It tarnishes over time but cleans easily.
  • Platinum is dense, naturally white and durable, and usually more expensive than gold.

Stones and cuts

A cut is designed to return light. Round brilliant cuts sparkle most; step cuts such as emerald cuts show clarity and colour. Iran has a long tradition with turquoise, especially from Nishapur.

Settings

  • Prong (claw) — lets in the most light; can catch on fabric.
  • Bezel — a metal rim around the stone; very secure and modern.
  • Pavé — many small stones set close together for a continuous sparkle.

Care

Store pieces separately to avoid scratches, remove jewellery for sport and cleaning, and have prongs checked from time to time. Keep your receipts and certificates.
